The short version of visceral adipose tissue fits in a sentence. The long version — which is the one that helps — is below.

Signaling begins at the GHRH receptor, a class B G protein-coupled receptor displayed on somatotroph cells of the anterior pituitary. Receptor occupancy activates Gs proteins, which raise adenylyl cyclase activity and intracellular cyclic AMP, in turn driving protein kinase A dependent pathways. The downstream output is synthesis and pulsatile secretion of growth hormone into the bloodstream. Hepatic tissue and peripheral sites respond by increasing insulin-like growth factor 1 production. Somatostatin and IGF-1 itself supply negative feedback that caps the size and duration of each secretory burst.
Metabolic interest in this compound centers on fat distribution rather than on hormone levels alone. Imaging trials in adults with excess abdominal fat report reductions in visceral adipose tissue, while subcutaneous depots change comparatively little. Growth hormone and IGF-1 are presumed to carry the effect, but the separate contribution of each is not firmly established. Whether these changes persist after treatment stops, and whether they alter longer-term health outcomes, remain open questions that published work does not answer consistently.
A Phase 3 program led to regulatory approval in the United States in 2010 for reduction of excess visceral abdominal fat in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy. Subsequent studies examined effects on liver fat, muscle area, and metabolic markers, with mixed findings for some endpoints. Long-term cardiovascular outcomes and effects on mortality remain uncertain because most trials were relatively short and focused on imaging-based fat measurements. Use in populations without HIV has been studied experimentally but is not part of the approved indication.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone, a peptide hormone produced by the hypothalamus. The molecule retains the 44-amino-acid sequence of human GHRH and carries a trans-3-hexenoyl modification at its N-terminus. This modification increases resistance to enzymatic degradation and extends the peptide's functional stability relative to native GHRH. The compound is supplied as a lyophilized powder for reconstitution and subcutaneous administration in clinical settings. Its development code was TH9507, and it belongs to the GHRH analog class. It is not a growth hormone product; instead, it acts upstream to stimulate endogenous growth hormone release.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Molecular class | Synthetic 44-residue peptide | GHRH analog backbone |
| Approximate molecular mass | 5136 Da | Varies with counterion and hydration state |
| N-terminal group | trans-3-hexenoyl | Increases resistance to dipeptidyl peptidase IV |
| Primary receptor | GHRH receptor (GHRHR) | Class B G protein-coupled receptor on somatotrophs |
| Principal mediator | IGF-1 | Rises indirectly after growth hormone release |
The hexenoyl cap slows the enzyme step that trims the amino terminus of native GHRH, the same step that shortens its active lifetime in circulation. As a result, the modified peptide persists longer in plasma than the unmodified hormone in side-by-side comparison. Receptor activity stays broadly comparable, because the added group sits away from the residues that contact the binding site. This combination, preserved receptor activity with reduced degradation, explains why the analog was developed instead of the native sequence.
Several compounds share the GHRH framework, including sermorelin, the shorter 1-29 fragment, and other analogs built on the full 1-44 chain. Naming follows a common convention: a stem that identifies the peptide plus a suffix marking analog status. Reports may describe tesamorelin by its sequence fragment, as a GHRH(1-44) analog, or by its amino-terminal modification. Indexing the compound therefore requires searching all of these forms, since some older literature predates the current international nonproprietary name.
Several related peptides act on the same receptor, including sermorelin, a shorter GHRH fragment, and modified analogs such as CJC-1295 and modified GRF(1-29) that are common in research settings rather than approved products. Tesamorelin differs from growth hormone itself in that it acts upstream, prompting the pituitary to release the hormone through physiological signaling rather than supplying it directly. Terminology in the literature distinguishes GHRH analogs, growth hormone secretagogues, and recombinant growth hormone, although popular discussion often blurs these categories together. Precise naming matters when comparing study results.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide of 44 amino acids that reproduces the sequence of human growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and carries a trans-3-hexenoyl group on its N-terminal tyrosine. That small fatty-acid modification blocks cleavage by dipeptidyl peptidase-4, the enzyme that rapidly degrades native GHRH in plasma. The result is a molecule with a longer circulating half-life than the natural hormone while retaining the same receptor target. It is supplied as a lyophilized powder for reconstitution and belongs to the broader class of GHRH analogs studied for effects on pituitary growth hormone secretion.
The peptide is synthesized chemically rather than extracted from biological sources. Solid-phase synthesis builds the chain from the C-terminus toward the N-terminus, after which the hexenoyl group is attached. Purity is typically assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography, and identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry. Regulatory review of the finished product focuses on these analytical controls, since small deviations in sequence or modification can change biological activity. Questions about long-term effects on the pituitary axis remain areas of continued investigation.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide that belongs to the growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) family. Its sequence corresponds to the fully active 44-amino-acid form of human GHRH, with a single structural modification: the addition of a trans-3-hexenoyl group at the N-terminus. That modification is not found in the naturally occurring hormone and was introduced deliberately during development to improve stability against enzymatic degradation. The compound is therefore best described as a stabilized analogue rather than a naturally occurring peptide.
In North Africa, the Wehrmacht shipped in fresh fruit from Italy and Greece to supplement its troops' rations, even during the Great Famine in Greece. The Imperial Japanese Army and Navy received rather basic rations, usually consisting of rice with barley, meat or fish, pickled or fresh vegetables, umeboshi, soy sauce, miso or bean paste, and green tea. The rations were intended to be eaten with other foraged food. Japanese soldiers were also issued emergency rations. The standard emergency ration, intended to last for five days, included a small sack of rice, package of compact food, package of hardtack, one-half pound (230 g) of hard candy, can of tea, and vitamin pills. Japanese soldiers also hunted dogs, goats, and other small animals to add to their emergency rations. In the Burma campaign, two types of emergency rations were used, "A" rations intended for three days consisting of 19 ounces (540 g) of rice and a small can of beef and vegetables, and "B" rations intended for one day consisting of three bags of hard biscuits. They were meant to be eaten only upon orders from a commanding officer when the unit was separated from its supply column. Japanese soldiers were often undersupplied. Japanese commanders had a cavalier attitude to food supplies for their troops and supply lines were often not protected. As a result, about 60% of Japanese military deaths during the war were due to starvation.
=== Domestic expansion === Their success encouraged the Murrells to franchise their concept the following year, engaging Fransmart, a franchise sales organization. Former American football player Mark Moseley, who had gone to work for Fransmart after his football career, played a key role in Five Guys' expansion and went on to become the company's director of franchise development after it ended its business relationship with Fransmart. In early 2003, the chain began franchising, opening the doors to rapid expansion which caught the attention of national restaurant trade organizations and the national press. The expansion started in Virginia and Maryland, and by the end of 2004, over 300 units were in development through the Northeast. Over the next few years, the chain rapidly expanded across the entire United States and into Canada, reaching over 1,000 locations by 2012. Five Guys Enterprises has several affiliated companies that are not part of a consolidated group, but are under common ownership. Five Guys Operations was founded in 2012, Five Guys Holdings was founded in 2007. Five Guys Foods UK Limited was incorporated on March 12, 2013. FGE International, FGO International BV, and FG Coöperatief U.A. are based in Amsterdam. FGH International C.V. is located in Bermuda. Five Guys had a 39,900-square-foot (3,710 m2) headquarters in Lorton, Virginia, overlooking the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers, that was specially designed to convey the corporate brand.
=== Immune checkpoint inhibitors === Because of HLA-G's role in inhibiting NK cell responses in cancer, clinical immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting HLA-G have been designed. Tizona Therapeutics developed TTX-080, a monoclonal antibody targeting HLA-G's interaction with ILT2 and ILT4. In 2020, a phase 1a/1b trial began to assess safety and preliminary efficacy in multiple cancers. Early results showed activity in HPV-negative HNSCC and HER2-negative metastatic colorectal cancer with WT RAS/BRAF, leading to an expansion of the trial.
Air knife coating Anilox coater Flexo coater Gap Coating Knife-over-roll coating Gravure coating Hot melt coating – when the necessary coating viscosity is achieved by temperature rather than solution of the polymers etc. This method commonly implies slot-die coating above room temperature, but it also is possible to have hot-melt roller coating; hot-melt metering-rod coating, etc. Immersion dip coating Kiss coating Metering rod (Meyer bar) coating Roller coating Forward roller coating Reverse roll coating Silk Screen coater Rotary screen Slot Die coating – Slot die coating was originally developed in the 1950s. Slot die coating has a low operational cost and is an easily scaled processing technique for depositing thin and uniform films rapidly, while minimizing material waste. Slot die coating technology is used to deposit a variety of liquid chemistries onto substrates of various materials such as glass, metal, and polymers by precisely metering the process fluid and dispensing it at a controlled rate while the coating die is precisely moved relative to the substrate. The complex inner geometry of conventional slot dies require machining or can be accomplished with 3D printing. Extrusion coating – generally high pressure, often high temperature, and with the web travelling much faster than the speed of the extruded polymer Curtain coating – low viscosity, with the slot vertically above the web and a gap between slot-die and web. Slide coating – bead coating with an angled slide between the slot-die and the bead.
For example, human height is a trait with complex causes. It has a heritability of 89% in the United States. In Nigeria, however, where people experience a more variable access to good nutrition and health care, height has a heritability of only 62%.

=== Disinfection === Much research has been done in evaluating the ability of the silver ion at inactivating Escherichia coli, a microorganism commonly used as an indicator for fecal contamination and as a surrogate for pathogens in drinking water treatment. Concentrations of silver nitrate evaluated in inactivation experiments range from 10–200 micrograms per liter as Ag+. Silver's antimicrobial activity saw many applications prior to the discovery of modern antibiotics, when it fell into near disuse. Its association with argyria made consumers wary and led them to turn away from it when given an alternative.
== Farmed insects not used for protein == Many vegans avoid honey and silk because these require insect farming, even though the insects are not eaten. Silk production involves boiling silk worms alive in their cocoons. The red pigment carmine is produced from powdered bodies of scale insects, so some vegans avoid it. Shellac is produced from a resin secreted by the lac bug on specific trees in Asia. In addition to its use in industry, shellac is incorporated into some fruits, coffee beans, and candies as confectioner's glaze. Some vegans avoid confectioner's glaze because lac bugs may be killed during shellac production. Lac used to produce red dye may be even more injurious to lac bugs because while shellac comes from lac-bug secretions, lac dye's color comes from the insect bodies themselves. Insects are also farmed in large numbers for biological control, where large numbers of parasitic or predatory insects might be reared and then released into the wild to control a pest species. Alternately, in the sterile insect technique, large numbers of sterile male insects may be reared and released in order to reduce wild populations of pest insects or prevent their range expansion, such as with the screwworm. Finally, insects may play an unusual role in specific protein production: fruit flies can be used to generate recombinant proteins which can be used for the production of cell-cultured meat or across many other industries.
Fruit is produced only on mature plants. This takes 2–3 years for meter long cuttings and 3–4 years for 12 in cuttings or tissue cultures. The fruits are 15–23-centimetre-long (5.9–9.1 in) pods (often incorrectly called beans). Outwardly they resemble small bananas. They mature after about eight to nine months.
== Clinical significance == Mutations in EBP cause Conradi–Hünermann syndrome and impairs cholesterol biosynthesis. Unborn males affected with EBP mutations are not expected to be liveborn, (with up to only 5% male births). Individuals, mostly female, that are liveborn with EBP mutations experience stunted growth, limb reduction and back problems. Later in life, the individual may develop cataracts along with coarse hair and hair loss.

The amino acid sequence matches human growth hormone-releasing hormone, but the amino terminus carries a trans-3-hexenoyl group instead of a free amine. That single structural change chiefly affects enzymatic stability rather than receptor selectivity.
Growth hormone released from the pituitary stimulates IGF-1 production in the liver and other tissues, so circulating IGF-1 generally rises during exposure. The size of the rise varies between individuals and depends on baseline hormonal status and other concurrent factors.
Reported imaging studies focus on visceral adipose tissue, where reductions are more consistently observed across trials. Subcutaneous depots show smaller and less reproducible changes, so the two compartments should not be treated as equivalent.
It is a synthetic peptide analog of human growth hormone-releasing hormone. It is used clinically to reduce excess visceral abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. It works by stimulating pituitary growth hormone release.
